Aside from making sure your new pet is healthy, there’s plenty of preparation that goes into bringing home a new pet. This is especially true if it’s your child’s first pet, due to the fact that they may not be entirely sure how to handle it properly. Caring for a new pet, and especially a dog, takes a lot of planning. Here are some tips for bringing home a new pet:
Before bring home your new pet, try your best to acquire the animal’s complete medical history. This could include their vaccinations, heartworm test and medication, tick and flea prevention, and other internal issues you should know about.
The last you’d want is to have a sick pet around your family and possible young children. Or worse, you wouldn’t want the pet to pass away just after your family becomes emotionally attached. A vet visit is essential upon bringing home your new friend as well.
If you have children at home, you’ll want to ensure the new pet is kid-friendly to avoid any issues between them. The temperament of the pet plays a big role in this. If possible, you should bring your child around the pet before making the decision to purchase it.
On the other hand, you’ll also want to make sure your child is aware of how to handle the new pet. Mishandling could cause the pet to become upset and nip at your child’s fingers.
When a pet is brought into the home, everyone’s responsibilities increased. If you are making this addition to the family unit, you should be sure that you have the time to put in for the pet.
It wouldn’t be fair to you or the animal if you can’t properly take care of it and give it the love it deserves. Make sure all tasks and responsibilities are accounted for before making the decision to purchase them.
Prepping the entire house for a new pet is recommended to make sure there are no potential hazards lurking. Since animals are instinctively curious and inquisitive, they’ll most likely go wandering around the house to inspect their new surroundings. You’ll want to make sure that the entire house is animal-proof and that there are no safety concerns that you’ll end up worrying about. This means covering electrical outlets, wires and cords, and putting away anything that your new pet could get their mouths or paws on!
Be ready to clean!
Pets bring in their own special odors into your home. You’ll want to make sure you have all the right cleaning products before there’s a mess. Use a natural, pet-safe detergent on your your pet toys.
