Benefits of Using Organic FabricsWe come in contact with fabrics every day. From the sheets on our bed, the diapers on our babies, to the clothes on our backs, we spend a lot of time on or within fabric, especially cotton. That means it’s important we make sure these materials are as safe as possible.

Organic fabric come from crops certified by the Organic Trade Association. It means they are made without the use of pesticides, insecticides or fertilizers. They use natural methods to grow their crops and do not spray them with anything synthetic.

Here are the benefits of buying and using organic fabrics.

  1. They’re better for your skin. Often the sources of allergic reactions, eczema and dermatitis are a result of the dyes, resins and formaldehyde in non-organic fabrics. These irritants stay with the clothing and leech out over time, meaning they can’t simply be washed away.
  2. Organic fabrics are safer for babies. Babies have delicate, developing skin that can’t withstand the harsh chemicals and toxins used in traditional fabrics. These toxins can have devastating effects on developing hormone and reproductive systems. Furthermore, it’s believed to cause fewer lifelong allergies.
  3. Some take up less space. Some organic products, like bamboo, take up less square acreage to grow than typical crops. Bamboo grows rapidly in tightly packed areas, meaning less land needs to be taken up to produce the same amount of fabric (or furniture).
  4. You know what’s in your products. The biggest problem with most fabrics (and any product, really) is that we just don’t know what’s in them. Even when manufactures list their ingredients on the label, it’s tough for the consumer to discern exactly what’s inside. In some cases, the manufacture is exempt from listing every substance.
  5. You’re doing good for the environment. Many fabrics are made using pesticides and insecticides. These dangerous chemicals can leech into the ground and our water systems. The crops used to make organic fabrics are grown using sustainable methods without insecticides and pesticides.
  6. Improved health of farmers. In many places, cotton is still hand-picked. Thousands of poor farmers in developing countries become sick every year because of their exposure to pesticides. Organic cotton and other fabrics ensures these producers live healthy lives.
  7. Safe labor conditions. The Global Organic Textile Standard that certifies organic products also insists on certain labor conditions for producers, including fair pay, working hours and collective bargaining rights.

organic bedding and accessoriesWritten by Jennifer Cicci of Babee Talk

As a mother, Jennifer understands the importance of offering nothing by the best for baby. Motivated by teeth marks on her children’s cribs, she decided to design a teething rail cover after trying products that didn’t measure up when it came to quality or style. What she found out made her even more concerned about children’s safety and health: The toxic chemicals used in the production of synthetic materials have been linked to birth defects, reproductive disorders, and weakened immune systems.

She asked herself, “What if I could revolutionize the way parents decorated their crib with a safe and stylish teething rail cover that could be placed on the crib from day one?” Babee Talk® launched in 2014 with organic bedding and accessories. Chew-friendly, drool-friendly, and organic inside and out, her products ensure a healthy start in life for babies.

She only offers products that she would provide for her own children. She hopes moms and dads will start to talk about the importance of choosing safe, healthy, eco-friendly products, especially for babies.
