Design a Safe Sleep Space'During the first year of your child’s life, sleep is absolutely vital. Other than food and loving arms, your baby needs little else. It’s important that the space your baby sleeps in be as safe as possible, mostly to prevent SIDS, but also to facilitate restful sleep.

Here is a list of tips you should use to ensure your child’s sleep space is safe.

  1. Use a firm sleep surface, like a sturdy mattress with just a fitted sheet.
  2. Keep blankets, pillows, bumpers or toys outside of an infant’s crib.
  3. Do not let anyone (yourself included) smoke around your baby.
  4. Always place your baby on his/her back to sleep to reduce the chance of SIDS.
  5. Dress baby appropriately for the temperature. No blankets!
  6. Make sure nothing covers baby’s head.
  7. Ideally, infants should sleep near his/her parents for the first few months. Room-sharing is healthy, but bed-sharing is dangerous.
  8. Don’t leave baby to sleep alone on a bed or couch.
  9. Give baby a dry pacifier (that isn’t attached to a string) to reduce the chance of SIDS, but don’t force it on your baby.
  10. Do not let your baby get too hot (overheating is SIDS risk).
  11. Swaddle your baby, but stop once he/she starts rolling over.
  12. Practice tummy time during the day so baby builds muscle, reducing the chance of SIDS.
  13. Don’t use devices that claim to prevent SIDS. They are at best ineffective and at worst, actually increase the SIDS risk.
  14. 25% of SIDS cases occur when baby is in the care of a non-parent. Make sure everyone who cares for the baby understands your policy about sleep safety.
  15. Use non-toxic, organic bedding products to protect your child’s development.
  16. Do not fall asleep with your baby in your arms on the couch or in your bed.
  17. Make sure crib bars are 1.8” to 2.6” apart to prevent baby from slipping his/her head between them and become caught.
  18. Keep baby’s crib out of direct sunlight and away from any drafts.
  19. Keep furniture away from the crib so climbing babies can’t sneak out.
  20. Once baby can sit up, remove mobiles and toys that hang from above.
  21. Never use a hot water bottle or electric blanket in the crib.
  22. If you use a small fan for cooling or white noise, place it away from the crib where it can’t be reached.
  23. Make sure your crib meets all modern safety standards.

organic bedding and accessoriesWritten by Jennifer Cicci of Babee Talk

As a mother, Jennifer understands the importance of offering nothing by the best for baby. Motivated by teeth marks on her children’s cribs, she decided to design a teething rail cover after trying products that didn’t measure up when it came to quality or style. What she found out made her even more concerned about children’s safety and health: The toxic chemicals used in the production of synthetic materials have been linked to birth defects, reproductive disorders, and weakened immune systems.

She asked herself, “What if I could revolutionize the way parents decorated their crib with a safe and stylish teething rail cover that could be placed on the crib from day one?” Babee Talk® launched in 2014 with organic bedding and accessories. Chew-friendly, drool-friendly, and organic inside and out, her products ensure a healthy start in life for babies.

She only offers products that she would provide for her own children. She hopes moms and dads will start to talk about the importance of choosing safe, healthy, eco-friendly products, especially for babies.
