The first years of a baby’s development are very important. It takes several months for a baby to acquire a protective natural barrier on their skin, making them susceptible to certain toxins and chemicals found in toys, baby items and certain environments. Today, parents have the possibility to buy organic products as a safer alternative to conventional baby items. The question is, what makes something organic?
"Organic" is a term used by the USDA to describe products manufactured under strict guidelines. This means that the products have not used any synthetic properties in being created. Many companies have recognized the need to broaden the organic industry from just food to other products, especially baby items.
There are different grades of organic labeling in the U.S
- 100 Percent Organic
- USDA Organic
- Made With Organic
General, products labeled "organic" are free of synthetic ingredients. Most Organic Baby products are 100% biodegradable. Organic products are made with natural oils and organic occlusive oils that are cold pressed. Depending on the product being made Gum plant material is added for solidity and viscosity, and only natural organic preservatives are added to prolong the life source. With fabric related products, using natural cotton is the standard to making organic bedding, clothing and toys.
Hazards of Non Organic Products
The biggest issues with toys, especially many that are manufactured in factories that are not heavily regulated, is that they can be contaminated with lead, a metal that harms brain development. Certain soft plastic toys are made with phthalates and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chemicals that have adverse effects on children’s health.
When it comes to baby apparel and bedding it is better to stay clear of fabrics made up largely of polyester and unnatural dyes. Avoid fabrics that have been treated with formaldehyde-based resins and be sure to wash clothes a few times before putting them on baby for the first time.
What we expose our children to today will have an effect on them tomorrow. Building a strong and healthy foundation for them will help them grow healthy and strong. Organic products are not only safe for your children, but for the environment. Think about it next time you are buying baby.
